Now that we have uploaded our film openings, we have been working on the evaluations for 2 weeks. First of all we split our 7 questions in our group; I decided to do "in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?" and "how did you attract and address your audience?". I also wrote Malkiyat's questions "how does your media product represent particular social groups?" and "who would be your target audience for your film?" Lastly, I did the editing for some parts with Shivani whilst Fabian edited his section.

Friday 13th: Today was the deadline. We published the video to youtube and I am very happy with the way it has turned out because I think it's well-paced (and keeps it interesting), the soundtrack is fitting. In addition to this, I feel that it captured the satirical/spoof side closer towards the end. This started with the phone call and when they walk past the boxes- after everything they've been through, they simply walk past the exam mark schemes. I think in terms of what we could have possibly improved on, potentially the credits (not the way they are positioned just what it says- could/should say "presents"). Also, I think there were a few scenes that were missed. However, I feel that we used the right camera angles, and the mise-en-scene, particularly the lighting and costume were well thought about.
Thrusay 12th: Today we all stayed back after school to edit. Tuesday 10th: Today I edited the clips by placing them in order and looking at the size of clips to generally show flow and continuity. I am really happy with this draft cut as I think as of right now the film captures my intention of being fun and energetic- and as a result is perfectly suited to the target audience. I also feel the the genre is clear, and the soundtrack choices- Covert 2 and Inferno are suitable. Covert 2's slow, yet constant beat is perfect for the planning scene and when the action kicks in, Inferno's fast pace and rhythm helps keep it exciting. I do however now know what I need to focus on- the continuity of the planning scenes as the transitions are currently too fast. Monday 9th: On Monday I looked at logo deign and helped Malkiyat design our production company ident- I decided the FEMS (Fabian, Eshan, Malkiyat and Shivani) would be our group name. Thursday 5th:Today we finished the planning scene. There were a few issues- in particular with the camera as there was an error that read "movie recording stopped automatically". So I searched it up and found a very useful video that explained two ways of fixing it- in the end I found out that it had something to do with the FPS and so I asked Fabian if he could lower it and it worked perfectly. I actually think it made the long take appear more seamless and professional than with a higher fps- so it all worked out for the best! Other than that Anushka helped with setting up and we filmed for a short while.
Wednesday 4th: Today we began editing our clip. I found out a number of things from the footage we shot yesterday. Here's what I will improve whilst filming on Friday:
Tuesday 3rd: Today we re-shot our warehouse scenes. I directed whilst the others acted, I used the previous footage as a basis for this one and used that to improve. One thing I tried to particularly focus was the pace and length of the shots. One thing was clear from the draft footage- that it was too slow and I needed to get shots from around 3 different angles. An action movie should be fast with quick cuts, this is where I went wrong the first time. We shot around 3/4 of the heist scene and I feel that there were a lot of improvements in this footage. We are going to film on Friday therefore to finish the scenes completely at the warehouse and also film at the communication center on Thursday to do the planning scene. Monday 2nd: Today we finished our Weebly tasks off to make sure we are ready for filming. I got some location shots of the planning room from Malkiyat and analysed them. I also got some pictures of different camera shots that we would like to implement into our film. This week the priority was making sure we were ready to film next week. After showing the teachers our footage from the previous week, we decided as a group that it would be necessary to make shorter shots to give the scenes a faster pace. Therefore next week Tuesday and Thursday we are going to complete filming and start editing on the Friday 6th. The due date is the 13th. Meanwhile, myself and Malkiyat looked at the soundtrack to give us an idea as to how fast we wanted the shots to be and to give us a rough idea as to how we wanted the general pace of the film would be; because a fast tempo diegetic is normally used in something action based. I also finished the script in proper format this week.
This week was half-term and this meant it gave us an opportunity to start filming. On Wednesday, we filmed the breaking in to the warehouse scene (which I directed). However, we were only able to film for a short while and so we had planned to film on the Friday (both), however Malkiayt couldn't make it on the day. Therefore, the current plan is to film the opening planning sequence on the Tuesday at school and film the rest of the heist scene on the Friday. Whilst we were filming, we were able to take the location and character photos which I will analyse this week.
FOR NEXT WEEK: Monday 23rd February-27th Analyse location, character photographs Finish filming (hopefully) Start editing!
Friday 13th February: Today we had to complete the research and planning for our film. We had already done the majority of this and so we had to; find research on he institutions and an idea for our logo, complete the first draft of the scoreboard, make a rough list about shot-types, editing and camera angles. I had already analysed 4 films that I considered to be inspiration for the idea and used some screenshots of camera shots, movements that I liked. I had also already completed the target audience questionnaire research analysis (putting the results of the 5 most important questions into graph form). I had to look at institutions and decided that Film4 would be an appropriate production company for our film thanks to films that they have made previously; Attack The Block, Four Lions e.t.c.
Wednesday 11th February: On Tuesday (10th) I completed the graphs for the results of the questionaire, I found out (through the five most important questions) that most people preffered dialogue as opossed to narration (7/10), people liked the idea regarding mixing the sub-genres of heist and spoof together (8/10), most preferred an fast tempo opening (8/10) and an action filled convention was preffered (6/10). Also, for the question regarding humour, the results were close in that 4 voted for slapstick, 3 voted for physical and 3 for sublte humour as well. I also started the first draft of the script on Monday and finished off today. Most of the research and planning is now done, it is just a matter of doing the story board and character profiles. I came up with the idea of calling the film "The Square Root" because I feel that it links to the idea of planning and deep thinking that the teenagers went through to pull of the heist. Monday 9th February- Today I started the first draft of the script whilst the others looked at their research and planning. We decided as a group on the costumes (and Malkiyat made a good suggestion about each character being a stereotype- a jock, techy geek and "stupid blonde" I guess). This new idea will allow us to show the importance of costume as it will help really define the characters. My character will most likely be dressed in a suit or smart to show that he is professional and slightly ahead of them. Next lesson (Wednesday 11th) we will finish of the script and complete the storyboard as well as producing the results for the questionnaire. Sunday 8th February: Today I looked at the four films that our group would used for inspiration. I came up with Ocean's Eleven (which is what I had in mind from the beginning), Attack the Block (which came after a suggestion by a teacher, I felt that that the style of humour could be appropriate for our film opening). Lastly, The Dark Knight heist scene and Point Break bank robbery scenes were to that were chosen to show to contradicting ways in which I could film the opening- either handheld and rough or completely smooth. I think I will use a mix of both to give the film opening a style that will connote that the heist has been well thought out- however potentially use a few handheld movements to connote that they are not completely professionals yet. In addition to this I also took some screenshots of camera shots and movements that I felt were appropriate for our film. Next week we will:
Friday 30th January: Today we looked at the Whiplash opening anatomy and analysed what were the intentions of the author and how he showed this. For example, one of the things that the author wanted to highlight was how music can cause fear and red- he did this by making JK. Simmons character come out of the shadows- much like a bat or something that induces that fear (like the character Batman). We then got back inter groups and take about our idea and we came up with a heist film that will involve three 'techy' students who plan on cheating for their exams and plan to 'steal' the exam mark schemes from an exam officer. The setting will be a warehouse in which the exams mark schemes are stored in. This will allow for a combination of genres- from action to spy- to even a parody (seeing as it is a group of teenagers).
Monday 2nd Febuary: Today myself and Malkiyat looked at the story of the opening and came up with the idea thanks to the help of the teachers that instead of us simply planning on robbing the warehouse, the story would involve my character potentially watching over them the whole time using cctv - looking at them wondering if they're up to the challenge of joining the agency that my character works for. I came up with the idea of filming in a warehouse and luckily Malkiyat said he knew a place in which we could film. On Wednesday we have to pitch. Wednesday 4th Febuary- Today all of our members were in class and so we were able to pitch to the class about our idea. The genre our film belongs to is heist as well as spoof. The reason why it comes down to being a spoof is because the characters are 3 techy kids who are plotting a heist on a warehouse containing the exam mark schemes. Malkyat, Fabian and Shivani would be playing the techy students whilst I will either be playing an exam officer who will be in the building at the same time to add tension, or some sort of officer who is watching them to decide whether they are up to the challenge of joinging the spy agency. The setting is a warehouse in Feltham opposite Tesco and the film will be set during May, exam time at night/during the late afternoon. The class seemed to enjoy the idea- I think one thing we will not do is to try and make it too funny but give it a rather light-hearted tone- much like Oceans Eleven/ Spy Kids which is sort of inspired by. I'd also like to think that the way in which we implement Jokes will be like the Marvel Films- jokes that don't shove it in your face and try to force you to laugh. Wednesday 6th February- Today we chose the films we will base our research around- The Dark Knight opening heist sequence, Point Break (the bank robbery scene as well), Attack the Block ( for the humour style) and lastly, the main inspiration for the film- Oceans Eleven. Wednesday 21st January- On Monday we were put into a group of four, and today we were told that we would have to complete a preliminary task that involved one character opening the door, walking to the green screen room, sitting down and having a conversation with another character. It had to follow the 180 degree rule and show continuity. Before this, we watched a few previous attempts to get an idea as to what was required. In my group, we made a script, made a storyboard and a plan as to where the camera would go as well as the characters themselves. I've had an idea for a while now about a hesist film that could be set in Central London and involve a planning scene and chase sequence to keep it interesting.
Friday 23rd January- Unfortunately, two people in my group were in today and so it was just myself and Shivani. We asked Sikander if he would help us and star in the short scene- which he did. We filmed and had to adjust the script because Malkyat and Fabian were meant to act. This meant it would be myself and Sikander acting- the story was basically me admitting that I had cheated on his mother. As it just was the two of us, we have some editing left for monday and then have to upload it on Youtube 26th Monday 26th January- Today we had to catch up with the other groups and edit our prelim. Me and Malkyat edited using Final Cut Pro and the other two members watched previous film openings to help us think about what we could potentially do for the real film. The final edit can be seen on the preliminary task page under the tab section. Wednesday 28th January: Today we watched our prelims as a group and took criticsm from others- for us the class said that the met the 180 degree rule and used shot reverse shot well. However, as you can see when I sit down I have my arms up an then put them back up which shows a lack of continuity Also, we didnt match the action by dong this. We then were told about the requirements for the real film and watched some previous enteries as well as genuine film openings- Children of Men, Se7en and Trainspotting- I persoanlly felt that the Children of Men opening was the best as it kept engrossed and ended on a cliffhanger. |
